NB – these crochet pumpkins are October’s crochet flower of
the month; following on the thought form last month – that without the flower
you wouldn’t get the fruit or veg! Hope
you don’t mind?
After August’s failed attempted at crocheting a flower of the month, I put real effort into crocheting September’s. I have to confess what I came up with, isn’t technically a flower – more of a berry. But you wouldn’t get the berry without the flower first, so I guess that is ok? I also decided to carry on the Autumnal theme, started at the beginning of the month. Here’s what I crocheted…

Yep! It’s a crocheted
Bramble! What could be more Autumnal
that brambles and apples, the very best ingredients for a crumble, to put on
your porridge or morning pancakes, to make into jam? I won’t be
making any jam this year, like I did last year, on the grounds that Si and I have failed
miserably to eat all of last year’s supply.
Must try harder!
August has been soooo very busy, I am afraid that there is no crochet flower of the month, this month. I simply have not found the time. That said my month has been quite flowery, with the fabric flower course and my crochet for Yorkshire Day. Instead of bringing you a new crochet flower of the month, I thought that I would share with you the pattern for last month’s Sunflower…
Here goes, using dark brown yarn to crochet the Sunflower’s
centre
Round 1: into a magic loop 2ch, 9dc, slst to join…
Round 2: 2ch, 1dc into each ch, slst to join…
Round 3: 2ch, 1dc into same dc, 1dc into next dc, *2dc, 1dc,*
slst to join…
Round 4: 2ch, 1dc into same dc, 1dc into next 2 dc, *2dc, 1dc,
1dc, * slst to join…
Round 5: 2ch, 1dc into same dc, 1dc into next 3 dc, *2dc, 1dc,1
dc,1 dc,* slst to join and fasten off.
Weave in any ends to secure. Crochet
two of these…
To make the petals, use a lighter coloured yarn.
Round 6: join the two centres together using double crochet…
When you are part way round joining the two centres, lightly
stuff them…
Then finishing joining together…
Now crochet the rest of the petals..
Round 7: 7ch and slst into dc…
Repeat this all the way round, until you have finished your
Sunflower…
I used a garden stick as my stem, which I covered using green
yarn slip stitched around it. I planted
my Sunflowers in plasticine and then covered the pot with a simple crochet
cover in rainbow colours for extra cheerfulness. I’ll share that pattern later: if you want?

I thought that they were the perfect flower to crochet, in celebration of the sun-shine returning. I love how the double crochet really looks like the centre of a real sun-flower and the chain crochet makes the petals...
They are all my own design, so I will share the pattern with you in a few posts time. That way you can crochet your very own bit of sun-shine. That will give you time to gather together your things. This is what you will need…
I also found the time to start crocheting flower brooches and now only have twelve granny-squares to crochet. A weekend well spent! Happy, hap-py, h-a-p-p-y!
With all the wet weather we have had (and still seem to be having: it’s just thundered – should I be blogging during a storm?) lately the only flower, in my tubs and pots, that have bravely showed their colours are the fuchsias. Fuchsias look so bright and cheerful, in amongst all the greenery, which is flourishing. Their petals are like little pockets of hope that one day, this summer, the rest of the garden might look as colourful…
Fuchsias were the natural choice to be June’s crochet flower. The first fuchsia, I crocheted solo. No pattern for back-up, just working my hook, crocheting and hoping. I don’t think that results were too bad…
I then turned to the very talented Lesley Stanfield’s book 100 flowers to knit and crochet. The pattern for crocheting fuchsias is in the advance designs section at the back of the book. Me crocheting from an advance design – I struggle with the basic patterns, seeing them more as guidelines than absolutes. I was strict, I followed the crochet pattern, to the stitch. I don’t think it turned out too bad either…
I think the one I crocheted to my own design can hold its petals high next to the one crocheted from Lesley’s book…
Do you like the crochet hooks, that I used as stems? I think a combo, of both patterns would be the best way forward: crocheting Lesley’s inner bell, my outer petals and definitely the bead for the stamens. Think I know what I’ll be doing later…
Just the memory of May blossom makes me smile. The way the trees wear the blossom as if the weight of it is too much, the vivid pink colours set against the blue sky, the promise of fruits later in the summer. Yes even on a rainy, grey, day like today: the memory of blossom makes my heart sing.
Blossom was an easy choice for May's crochet flower of the month, especially after buying the amazing Party Angel yarn, by Debbie Bliss, on my shopping spree. As soon as I saw the yarn, I knew what it had to be crocheted into...
I love how the kid mohair, of the yarn, gives each of the blossom a fuzzy, hazy feel...
I am really pleased with how these turned out...

Wow! Is the weather as wet with you, as it is here? It seems that ever since there were reports of drought that it hasn’t stopped raining. Mother Natures idea of irony! I really think that the rain has gone beyond April showers now. The upside of all this rain is the amount of time I can spend, guilt free, crocheting. Usually by now I feel I should be sorting the garden (which is looking neglected again, despite the work we did during the warm weather, whenever that was) but with all the rain my motivation isn’t there.
I have been crocheting way, and have almost finished my Bluebell...
What do you think? I am pleased with them, especially using the bead of the centres. All that is left crochet are the stalks. I am thinking of something similar to the Snowdrop stalk, so that the flowers can keep their heads bowed. I was looking in a book, and according to folk-lore, Bluebells hang their heads because of their association with death. Medieval archers used the sap to make a sticky glue for attaching feathers to arrows! There is an interesting, if a little morbid, fact for you!
Something more cheerful…crocheting all afternoon while listening to the rain fall on the ground. See there are positives in the rain…
Committing to crocheting a flower a month is taking some doing. I didn’t quite realise how quickly they would come around: it only seems like a minute ago when I was thinking about March’s Daffodils. Here we are in the middle, mid-DLE, of April. This month’s crocheted flower will be the Bluebell. I guess Bluebells are very appropriate especially as according to one news source (so must be true) the English Bluebell is on the decline. I had intended to go to visit a beautiful woodland and take lots and lots of photographs for inspiration. I haven’t found the time to do this. Instead my inspiration comes from a birthday card, which I got last month…
I did manage to find the time to visit Ramshambles to stock up on Bluebell colour yarn…
And to Viking Loom to get some beads, which I think will become the middle bits...
What are the middle bits of flowers called? I MUST look that up.
Now all that if left to do is the actual crocheting bit. I’ll let you know how I get on…
Where had I got to? Oh yes, crocheting the Daffodil’s trumpet. I switched colours and began to play. After a few attempts with different stiches, settled upon a happy combination of doubles, trebles with picot to make the rufflely end…
After crocheting the picot into each of the trebles, I had something with that (I think) resembles a Daffodil’s trumpet…
I sewed the crochet parts together and, ta-dah…
A crochet Daffodil! I played about with colour, and came up with a few different crocheted Daffodils, Narcissus and other Daffodil inspired flowers…
I have to say I am really pleased with how these looked. I know that I have only three crochet flower of the month, the Snowdrop in January, the Rose in February, but I think that this is my best yet.
I can’t wait for next months…
For the past few days I have walked home from work around the City Walls just so that I can see the Daffodils zinging in the sunshine...
They surround the mount that Cliffords Tower stands on…
They look so lovely: they just had to become March’s flower of the month. I gathered together Daffodil coloured yarns, and started to crochet. I began with crocheting the petals…
So far this is what I have got…
I’m pretty pleased with them. Now I just need to work out how to crochet the trumpet…
Note: I should point out, to any plants people, that I am using the term Daffodil quite generically for all of these happy, cheerful flowers, and am quite aware that some of them are in fact are Narcissi and some are just going to be a product of my imagination:-)
